Elected AG, anyone?
As a concerned citizen, I feel it is time for us as a people to demand from our government that we be given the right to vote for our attorney general.
For far too long, the Governor’s Office has used the AG’s position as a political tool for his own agenda. If some poor soul should happen to go against the Governor or the Lt. Governor, that poor soul can rest assure that he will be a target for either an audit or harassment from the AG’s office.
I know for sure though that no senator (except for Sen. Pete Reyes) would ever support such a measure. The reasons for that are of course quite obvious: they don’t want to end up being scrutinized by an elected AG, as they may very well end up like some senator or former public official down in Guam.
But I say that this is long overdue. The AG’s office should be free from harassment or abused as a tool to go after whomever the governor does not like. In other words, the governor should be held accountable for his own actions and the attorney general should be able to bring charges against him should he break the law or abuse the public trust.
I remember in the beginning of the governor’s term, the only thing he did was go on frequent trips to Japan, hire relatives at above the allowed salary levels and then tell government employees that they should give a portion of their earnings to government coffers because of the poor financial condition at the time. Now, all of a sudden, he is a working governor hell bent in going after any political party that does not support him or his party! If the attorney general’s position was not a tool of the governor I feel that the AG could have held his own investigation into the governor, or anyone else who should break the law or abuse their power.
It is time, people; it is time for us to demand from our government the right to choose! It is time for us have the right to vote for an attorney general, one who is not answerable to the governor but to the people. And if anyone says that the attorney general now is not a tool of the governor, then maybe that person has something to hide and fears prosecution by the people!
What do you think?
