Decent jobs for decent workers

I find Ms. Vicky King Taitano’s letter funny. It’s funny how she discussed the absence of decent jobs and decent wages for local workers in the private sector because desperate nonresidents are willing to accept a job at whatever cost. I don’t mean to be prejudice or something but I think Ms. Taitano jumped overboard when she talked about decent jobs and decent wages without correlating these with DECENT local workers. Only DECENT WORKERS—residents or nonresidents—deserve decent jobs and decent wages. Decent workers mean NOT calling in sick every other day. Decent workers mean NOT taking a leave because a friend’s, friend’s great, great grandmother passed three weeks ago. Decent workers mean NOT expecting to hold a managerial position after completing grade school or junior high. Come to think of it, we always blame nonresident workers for all the bad things that are happening to local people. But have we ever asked ourselves why all these foreigners are in the CNMI? Isn’t it because local workers, most of whom are no more than just high school graduates, prefer to work in the government because that’s the only industry in the islands that would give them the kind of pay they want (and don’t deserve) in exchange, of course, for votes come election time. I suggest Ms. Taitano make an extensive research of what decent is before she actually starts talking about the subject. She just makes me puke!
