Committee primes for overnight ‘March’
Preparations for the Commonwealth’s largest fundraiser in the fight against cancer have shifted to high gear.
The Marianas March Against Cancer aims to raise vital funds that will help pay for the search for a cure, cancer patient services, prevention and awareness programs, and other critical research.
“The Marianas March Against Cancer is an important event that gives everyone an opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors, to remember those who have lost the fight, and most importantly to raise money and awareness for those struggling with the disease,” said Reyna Malone, chairperson of the 2005 Marianas March Against Cancer Committee. “This year marks the 3rd time the March has been held and we have a dedicated group of volunteers are excited to put on the most memorable event.”
Thousands of people participated last year’s Marianas March Against Cancer, which raised more than $60,000.
“We’re encouraging individuals, corporate establishments, government agencies, schools, and other organizations to take part in this worthy event by joining or sponsoring a team,” Malone said.
Participants are encouraged to walk, run, or even dance around the course over a 12-hour period.
This year’s MMAC will be held at the Hopwood Junior High School racetrack in San Antonio on May 13 through 14. There will be fun activities throughout the night and into the morning, including musical entertainment, dance performances and other fun events.
The Marianas March Against Cancer also honors cancer survivors and those lost through a special survivor’s lap at the beginning of the race and during a service featuring hundreds of candles placed around the track. It is an unforgettable ceremony honoring those who have won the fight against cancer and remembering those who have passed on.
The Marianas March Against Cancer is the fundraising arm of the Commonwealth Cancer Association and is the principal source of funds for the CCA.
