Cougars upset G-Rollers in IVYBL
The Kagman Cougars put on an unexpected show Monday night, beating powerhouse G-Rollers, 33-31, in the ongoing Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League at their home court.
After getting off to a slow start that enabled the G-Rollers to put up a 10-2 lead after the first eight minutes of action, Kagman finally got it going and began to show positive signs despite trailing 9-18 at halftime.
Fueled by a little pep talk from their coaching staff at the break, the Kagman players kicked off the second half with a stronger bid and exploded for 15 points while stunning the G-Rollers by limiting them to just six points. By the time the buzzer sounded signifying the end of the third quarter, Kagman had already pulled even at 24-24.
The G-Rollers tried to stave off the upset and picked up their defensive intensity, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Cougars, who carried their momentum to the fourth period and got a huge lift by Nicholas San Nicolas, who nailed four field goals in the last eight minutes.
San Nicolas scored all of his eight points in the fourth stanza, while cagebelle Chelsea Ruluked also pumped in eight points to lead the Cougars, who prevented any Garapan player from breaking into double figures.
Jeri Cruz and Ric Basilla led the G-Rollers with six points apiece.
