CNMI observes Vietnam War recognition week
The CNMI will be honoring next week all American soldiers who participated in the Vietnam War, with the Veterans of Foreign Wars leading the commemoration with a kick off activity today, called Loyalty Day. The event will also be celebrated across the entire nation.
The VFW Post No. 3457 on Saipan is calling on all Vietnam veterans in the CNMI to visit the Military and Veterans Affairs Office on Capitol Hill to register, so they will be able to participate in all of the activities scheduled this week.
Vietnam veterans can also call Mariano Fajardo at 287-4938, Larry Guerrero at 287-1052 or Matias Charguel at 287-7038 for more information.
The U.S. Congress, with the support of President Bush, designated May 1 to 7 as Vietnam Veterans Recognition Week.
The president said that he encourages every individual, school, church, organization, business establishment and household within the United States jurisdiction to take active participation in the reaffirmation of its strong allegiance to the American flag and the country.
He said he hopes the public will take part in the VFW’s patriotic programs in line with the commemoration beginning today until seventh of May.
In a media release yesterday, the VFW Post No. 3457 urged all loyal citizens to make it a duty to inspire others through complete patriotism by displaying “true red, white and blue Americanism.”
More than three million American military personnel served in Vietnam during the war.
“Vietnam veterans will tell you they fought for one reason—freedom,” said the media release. “Vietnam veterans often bore the brunt of a nation angry and divided by different sentiments, but in spite of the disrespect and derision the soldiers received when they returned home, the veterans stood proud and deep inside they knew they fought a good fight and their cause was truly just for one reason that is freedom,” the VHW statement said.
It added that the Vietnam veterans can be proud of their legacy, especially the vow they kept to ensure that future generation would always receive the rewards and the appreciation they earned throughout the years.
