Judiciary declares May as ‘Juror Appreciation Month’
The CNMI’s judiciary has proclaimed May as Juror Appreciation Month as part of a national celebration.
Supreme Court chief justice Miguel Demapan and Superior Court presiding judge Robert Naraja signed a proclamation during a ceremony at the High Court’s courtroom before noon Friday.
Jurors in an ongoing trial that went on recess Friday witnessed the event, where they were honored and given recognition certificates. The CNMI judiciary’s magistrates witnessed the event.
“The decisions of jurors affect millions of lives everyday and have a profound impact on our economy and our society. By entrusting jurors from the community to decide legal cases—some of them involving millions of dollars or life-and-death issues—we reinforce our belief that everyday people can make the right decisions and that we are an open, democratic government,” the proclamation read.
The judiciary urged the public, including schools and businesses, to preserve and strengthen the jury system.
As part of the celebration, magistrates and attorneys would be visiting schools in the CNMI. In a media statement, associate justice Alexandro Castro said they would reach out to about 1,300 students to educate them about the jury system. (John Ravelo)
