The Tokyo-based Wakai Nekko No Kai Ocean University program will be making its 37th annual visit this year with the participation of two Northern Marianas College students in its upcoming voyage from Tokyo to Saipan.

The floating university is set to arrive at the Port of Saipan at 7:30am on Wednesday, May 4.

This year’s participating NMC students are Clarissa Campos, currently pursuing an associate degree in business management, and Rose Marie Jones, an education major nearing completion of her bachelor’s degree.

Last year, NMC student activities coordinator Adryanne Jo “AJ” Sablan and student Rima Yamagishi represented the CNMI on the voyage.

“It was a terrific cultural exchange experience filled with countless opportunities to learn about culture, goodwill, kindness and friendship,” said Sablan. “This is a journey that I will remember for a lifetime, and I am grateful to [Wakai Nekko No Kai president] Mr. Hideo Kato…and all of the organizers that made this experience possible.”

This year marks the 18th consecutive year that Wakai Nekko No Kai has sponsored CNMI students’ participation in its weeklong Ocean University voyage. The students will be joining approximately 300 Japanese visitors.

Over the past 37 years, Wakai Nekko No Kai has brought over 15,800 Japanese visitors to the CNMI as part of its Ocean University cultural exchange program.

Pacific Development Inc. and the Marianas Visitors Authority, along with the CNMI-Wakai Nekko No Kai committee composed of representatives from NMC, Marianas High School, Saipan Southern High School, Kagman High School, Mt. Carmel School, Grace Christian Academy, the Governor’s Office, and the Mayor’s Office of Saipan are working hard to organize a successful cultural exchange.(PR)
