May is older Americans Month
Gov. Juan N. Babauta proclaimed last Friday the month of May as older Americans Month or “Mes Man’amko Maramal Tufaay.”
“Celebrate Long-Term Living” is this year’s theme for recognizing the CNMI American elderly. Babauta said in his proclamation that the celebration is simultaneously observed throughout the United States and its territories, including the CNMI.
Babauta said the goal for long-term living is in line with the Commonwealth’s goals for its senior citizens. In serving the elderly, he said the community learns from them about the success of living the age-old adage of “love, respect, and forgiveness.”
The governor called on the CNMI public to help senior citizens improve their quality of life by increasing their involvement in the community to make them live longer and healthier through physical activities, healthy diet and regular health check ups.
Celebrating and recognizing senior Americans, said Babauta, also acknowledges the tremendous work of caregivers and their quiet determination in providing for, loving, supporting, respecting, and guiding senior citizens.
He said the celebration is also a celebration of the growth of the Commonwealth’s Office on Aging from its establishment 31 years ago this year.
Aging Office director Joe Palacios said they have lined up several activities during the month of celebration. There will be conferences, luncheon with government officials, cultural presentations, Masses, and other activities. (Marconi Calindas)
