160 parents get educated on raising their kids
At least 160 parents gathered Saturday for the CNMI Head Start Program’s Parent Education Day at the Hyatt Regency Saipan, which featured several health workshops and seminars.
Parents of students attending Head Start Programs on Saipan participated in the one-day seminar.
One of the event’s coordinators, Josephine Tudela, said they were very happy with the turnout of the event. She said the Tanapag Head Start center brought in the most number of parents during the event.
The parents were very cooperative, said Tudela, as they assembled at the workshop venue at SandCastle as early as 7am.
One parent from San Antonio, Bonifacio Tuazon, said he attended the workshop for the first time to learn matters concerning his parenting skills, so his three children could benefit.
Different workshops were allotted to divide the participants for more intimate discussions of several topics concerning their children.
In the morning, Diabetes Prevention and Control Program manager Lynn Tenorio and evaluation leader Tayna Belyeu-Camacho presented subjects on public health. Department of Public Safety officer Regino Celis Jr. had a brief presentation reminding parents of the importance of buckling up in the CNMI.
Other topics in the workshop included: Behavior Management and Positive Discipline, Eating for Health of It, Oral Health, Common Sense Parenting, Anger and Stress Management, STD/AIDS, Visual Perception Development in Young Children, and Child Abuse and Neglect.
The workshop included speakers from the Community Guidance Center, Division of Youth Services, and Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service.
The Tinian Head Start center held their parents’ workshop last Friday and Rota Head Start would hold its own workshop today, said Tudela.
The CNMI Head Start Program’s staff, parents and students are extending their appreciation for the assistance they received from several community members and partners and for their continued support, contribution and participation in the program.
