The Cooperative Education and Training class of Marianas High School picked up trash Saturday, May 7, from the San Vicente Roundhouse all the way to Dandan Elementary School.

The Co-Op students volunteered to help out and clean up as part of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce’s proactive Cash for Trash Program.

The Chamber, in coordination with its members, sponsors groups with an educational or environmental purpose to clean up trash on beaches, parks, and roadways.

The Co-Op students expressed shock at how much trash had accumulated on the roadway. Students collected beer bottles and cans, juice boxes, candy wrappers, and much more.

The class rounded up 15 bags of trash and one old tire.

Several of the students felt positive about the day.

“The cleanup was fun! It was my first time to pick up trash and it felt good to clean up Saipan. I encourage others to participate in helping to keep Saipan clean and beautiful for the tourists and for the people of the CNMI,” said Franklin Palacios.

Kelmer Aughenbaugh, another student, said, “It was fun to be with my friends. It was hard work and lots of trash.”

Ken Stewart had a reminder: “Don’t litter! Recycle the recyclables such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans, white paper, and glass.”

All in all, the Co-Op students felt good about helping out their community and want to take the opportunity to thank the Saipan Chamber of Commerce for their efforts in facilitating the Cash for Trash Program.
