Jan Kimberly T. Alcantara took home the Commissioner’s Award during the graduation ceremony held at the William S. Reyes Elementary School Thursday morning.
Alcantara is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and president of the Student Council Leadership.
Awarded the Presidential Award for Educational Excellence, the Principal’s award was Fumi Nimura, while Ira Marie Palero received the Kingfisher Award.
The ceremony was held on school grounds, with student teacher James Montenegro opening the floor. Some 83 Kingfishers filled the stage as they sang to the U.S. and the CNMI’s national anthem along with WSR school song.
Recognized for their academic achievement were the top 10 graduates of their class: Alcantara, Nimura, Leah Padilla, Marie Del Carmen, Leilani Haruzi, Malissa Guevarra, Jason Pangelinan, Crystal Garcia, Ignacio Dela Cruz, and Noel Roque Jr.
The graduates were also presented with the Presidential awards, American Citizenship awards, Bilingual awards, National Junior Honor Society awards, and the Student Council Leadership awards, among others.
In his opening remarks, school principal Alfred B. Ada recited the school’s motto, “Aim high, fly high, go kingfishers,” and reviewed the successes and accomplishments of the graduates, encouraging the students to continue to rise to any occasions.
“Today, as we sit here we are celebrating another stepping stone. …It was our goal that you master life skills and the tools that you need to survive in the real world of junior high,” he said. “Whether it be academics, sports, competitions, the mighty Kingfishers are always there to represent in aiming high and flying high.”
On hand to commend the graduates were associate commissioner for curriculum and instruction Rita Sablan, associate commissioner for administrative services Dr. David Borja, Parent Teacher Association president Antonio Benavente, vice president Mary Jane Limes, secretary Junie Aldan, and the chair of the Board of Education, Roman Benavente.
