2005 LibDay carnival kicks off on Friday
Despite some budget cuts for this year’s Liberation Day celebration, the executive steering committee that is organizing the event promises the public a “fun” event.
“We had to trim down expenses, but we are doing our best to ensure that this year’s Liberation Day festivities are exciting, fun and worthwhile,” said committee chair Eloy Inos.
He said that, to celebrate this year’s theme “Liberty, Peace and Freedom” with limited resources and funds, the committee decided to be creative in order to host the island’s largest community event and “hopefully be successful at it.”
For the first time, the committee is teaming up with private sponsors, hosting a series of new entertainment events and creating an open float competition.
The 2005 Liberation Day Carnival will start this upcoming Friday, opening the celebration with the island’s largest community festivities. The carnival will be open at 6pm with 44 concessionaires selling different kinds of food, cold drinks and booth games that would be a sure hit for the families.
Public relations officer Laila Y. Boyer said there will be live entertainment, with Tropical Blendz, Tipeyewee Dancers and Teka Ha Nui opening and closing the night. The 2005 Liberation Day Royal Court candidates will also be introduced with the pinning ceremony at 8pm.
She said the public should watch out for a new ride called “Spider.” A miniature horse ride flown from the mainland will also provide delight to children.
The 2005 Liberation Day Parade float competition will have all organizations competing for a $2,500 grand prize. Interested parties who wish to participate have until June 3 to register. Application forms are available at the Saipan’s Mayor’s Office or contact Paul Reyes at 664-2200. They may also call the mayor’s office at 234-6208.
The playing field has been leveled, said Inos, and all float entries have to compete through the criteria of balance, originality, artistic imagination and the effectiveness of color combination.
The essay competition entries must also be forwarded to them by June 1 at the Mayor’s Office.
