Four students from the CNMI flew to Okinawa, Japan, this week for a seven-day cultural exchange program.

Rota High School’s Daisy Amalia Barcinas Flores, Tinian High School’s Casey C. Borja, Marianas High School’s Normaine C. Pangelinan, and Kagman High School’s Reyna Lee Aldan Tebuteb left for Okinawa early Tuesday.

Palau High School students Juliana Ngiraingas and Kimberly Kingzio will join them.

Pacific Development, Inc. public relations and marketing manager Gordon Marciano said Keiko Manglona would serve as the students’ chaperone during the 17th Annual CNMI /Okinawa Student Exchange Trip.

“This year we are honored by the presence of our student-ambassadors from Palau and the CNMI, chosen by their schools,” said Marciano.

He said the Micronesian Repatriation Association of Okinawa, Marianas Visitors Authority, and Saipan Mayor’s Office are sponsoring the cultural exchange program.

Upon arriving in Okinawa, the students would go on a sightseeing tour of the city, which includes a visit to the Shuri Castle. They would also participate in an MRA peace ceremony and attend a dinner reception. A little shopping would be included in their itinerary as well.

The students will head back to the CNMI on Sunday.

Marciano said MRA Okinawa paid for all the expenses of the students, adding that PDI is extending its utmost appreciation to the MRA for continuing the student exchange program.

He said PDI also wants to extend the same invitation to students from Okinawa and “hopefully next year the people of the CNMI and MRA families in the Commonwealth would consider returning the same gesture by inviting students from the city.”

With most of MRA’s members passing on, he said, PDI is hoping that the next generation of MRA families will continue the tradition, which is now on its 17th year running.
