While every golf course on Saipan is open to everyone from the scratch duffer to the hopeless hack, the majority golf outings are usually composed of foursomes of fathers driving the fairways and chipping from the fringe.

This Saturday, June 25, the management at the LaoLao Bay Golf Resort is shaking things up a bit by opening the links for a combination of golf and games during Family Fun Day.

Rather than cruising the course in golf carts, the change of pace begins at 6am with an on-course walkathon to benefit the Commonwealth Diabetes Coalition. The activities continue at 8am through 4pm with a carnival, assorted games, a kite-flying exhibit, horseback riding, and an “experienced” equipment bazaar and sale.

Also at 8am, there will be a wildlife booth hosted by the Department of Land and Natural Resources and a Nature Walk/Ride until 4pm.

Educators will also be on hand to enlighten attendees with a water cycle and conservation demonstration by the Department of Environmental Quality from 1pm until 2pm.

Of course, the day of fun wouldn’t be complete without a golf tournament, and organizers have provided plenty of reasons for the best to come out to the bay. At stake are cash prizes totaling $4,000 and for the top three finishers of the Championship Flight, the A Flight, B Flight, C Flight, Ladies Flight, Seniors Flight, and Juniors Flight, and cash, six months of unlimited golf, and a set of car keys in the Hole-in-One Challenge.

Each of the top players from each flight will stand to take home cash prizes that include $100 for third, $200 for second, and $300 for winners in the adult divisions and $50, $100, and $150 for the top three juniors.

In addition to the cash, up to three months of driving range balls are up for grabs for junior winners and six months of unlimited golf for first place winners in the adult flights.

The cost to enter the tournament is $100 for adults and $40 for juniors by yesterday’s early bird deadline or $120 and $50 starting tomorrow. Tournament participants need to be on site at 10:30am on Saturday in order to be ready for the 11:30am shotgun start.
