Covenant Party’s standard bearer Benigno R. Fitial and Timothy P. Villagomez were the only ones who showed up at the CNMI Bar Association’s forum for gubernatorial candidates yesterday.

Association president Ed Manibusan said that all candidates, including Sen. Luis P. Crisostimo, were invited but some of them had prior engagements such as in the case of Gov. Juan N. Babauta and Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente of the Republican Party.

The GOP tandem said they had to attend the bi-annual membership meeting of the Marianas Visitors Authority to discuss Northwest Airlines’ new flight to Saipan.

Manibusan said that independent candidates Heinz S. Hofschneider and David Apatang gave no response to the invitation, while Democratic Party’s Froilan C. Tenorio said no.

Manibusan said that Crisostimo did confirm his attendance but he did not arrive at the luncheon gathering of lawyers held at Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Fitial, for his part, said that he answered all the questions—from power and utility issues, to the environment, business, and taxation.

“It’s a good opportunity for me to share my thoughts and visions on these things,” he said.

Manibusan said the association, which meets every month, may hold another forum for the gubernatorial candidates.
