At least 100 youth busy for summer camp
At least 100 participants and 40 youth volunteers and facilitators are now having a busy summer with the start of the Youth Bazaar Summer Camp at the Hopwood Junior High School last Wednesday.
Despite the heavy downpour, participants braved the bad weather and arrived at the venue as early as 7:30am.
Special assistant for Youth Affairs Florence Kirby said the formal opening ceremony of the summer camp was moved to next Monday. Kirby said they would have to make sure they have put everything in place such as tents first before the ceremony.
The camp was scheduled to kick off last Monday but due to the delay of the release of the allocated funding for the Youth Affairs office, the camp start date was postponed for two days.
The dilemma did not stop the group, however, as they began the camp by dividing the participants in groups to be taken care of a youth volunteer.
Some groups started with outdoor games and some started with in-door workshops such as the visual arts sessions with renowned local visual artist Luis Ogo.
Ogo, who also painted the murals on the walls of the Taro Sue store along Middle Road, has been tapped by Kirby to conduct the visual arts session during the camp.
The camp will run from June 18 to July 23 and Kirby said earlier that the youth center is doing the activity to make the summer of the CNMI youth worthwhile and productive. The camp has hired instructors also for music, theater, dance, and other fields of interests. Kirby said the summer camp aims to make the CNMI youth’s summer vacation more productive and worthwhile by engaging them in a myriad of activities.
