GYLC youths pick up trash for cash
With the morning sun behind their backs, Garapan Youth Learning Center registered youths for Summer 2005 marched from Christo Rai church, past Hotel Street and then on to the Garapan Fire Station to pick up trash along side Beach Road on June 28.
GYLC participants were given the opportunity to pick up trash for cash by participating in the Saipan Chamber of Commerce Trash for Cash program.
Picking up trash to help protect and beautify Saipan’s environment is not new for these youths as community service is instilled among participating youths. It is hoped that after leaving the center, participants will continue to help protect their island’s environment.
Aside from the Cash for Trash program, summer participants have been picking up trash once a week from Aboni Beach area behind McDonald’ Beach Road Garapan to Micro Beach.
During the morning traffic, 16 summer youths, two Workforce Investment Agency summer trainees, staff, and the center’s AmeriCorps members were oblivious to passing motorists as they continued to stuff their trash bags with discarded items. Beer bottles, dirty napkins, store boxes, plastic cups, cigarette buds, and other items were properly disposed of.
Last year, during the summer, the center also participated in the Trash for Cash program.
“Polluting the island with trash is an on-going problem the CNMI face, but with the help of Saipan Chamber of Commerce and the center’s summer participants, it’s a small step towards cleanliness for everyone to enjoy today, and for the future,” according to the center’s Lucia Henry. (PR)
