Mayor Tudela invites public to Liberation Day
Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela is inviting the general public to join the Commonwealth in celebrating Liberation Day tomorrow, July 4, marking the 59th year of the Liberation of the CNMI.
Borja said Liberation Day marks the day the gates of Camp Susupe were finally opened, symbolically ending the Japanese occupation of Saipan.
According to Borja, Chamorros and Carolinians who were fortunate to survive the Battle of Saipan were finally free to rebuild their lives from the ashes of war.
Tudela said that July 4 is also the United States’ Independence Day. The CNMI became a part of the American political family in 1978. Today, the community enjoys freedoms under the American flag and as a self-governing Commonwealth that provides access to better jobs and educational opportunities to its people.
“Today, many of our future leaders attend top universities in the United States with the help of our scholarship assistance,” he said.
Tudela said the CNMI is enjoying access to quality health care, both in the Commonwealth and on the mainland.
The mayor said this year’s celebration is themed “Celebrating Liberty, Peace and Freedom.”
He extended his gratitude to the effort and hard work of this year’s Liberation Day committee led by its chairman, Eloy S. Inos.
Although Liberation Day celebrations actually kicked off some three weeks ago, the committee still has a full slate of activities for the public to enjoy.
For instance, the 2005 Liberation Royal Court Coronation was held last night on the carnival grounds at the Garapan Fishing Base. The King of the Grill competition will then be held today beginning at 5pm in the same venue.
However, the big event will be held on Monday, when all roads from Quartermaster Road, Beach Road to Kristo Rai Church in Garapan will be closed from 6am onwards for a parade of spectacular floats. A fireworks display will also be one of the highlights on Monday. The fireworks show will start at 9pm. The carnival will be open on Monday from 9am to 12am the next day.
