Passi is 2005 Liberation Day Queen
Yvonne Passi burst into tears of joy after being crowned 2005 Liberation Day Queen last Saturday night, saying she hadn’t really wanted to join the pageant in the first place.
Passi, 16, and a student of Saipan Southern High School, said she needed a lot of convincing from her parents, relatives and friends just to join this year’s royal court.
She bested five other candidates by selling the most number of tickets for the benefit of the Saipan Mayor’s Office’s community service events and projects for Saipan.
The coronation was held at the Liberation Day Carnival in Garapan Fishing Base, with hundreds filling up the carnival grounds to push for their own bets during the coronation night.
The Royal Court Princess was Nicole B. Robert, while first runner-up was Indira Jolin W. Kaipat. The First Princess tiara went to Rona Joyce Santos; Second Princess was Evelyn P. Pangelinan and Third Princess was Jeannadine Rangamar.
Passi did not show up during the candidates’ presentation on May 26 because she said she had to attend school and thought of backing out since she never thought of herself in a pageant.
She said she was completely speechless and surprised when she was declared as this year’s Liberation Day queen.
The candidates had a taste of royal treatment, arriving at the festival grounds in two stretch limousines and escorted by a Department of Public Safety police group. JROTC cadets lined up along the walk of the candidates to the stage.
The candidates and 2004 Liberation Day royal court winner stepped out of the limousines one by one, donned in elegant evening gowns that brightened up the evening.
Led by 2004 Liberation Day Queen Leiana Ogumuro, the 2004 royal court stepped up the stage followed by this year’s candidates. Ogumuro took her final bow, ending her reign as 2004 Liberation Day Queen. She said she was extremely grateful to her mentors, friends and parents.
Richard Saures sang Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight” as he gave out roses to the contestants.
The royal courts of 2004 and 2005 also participated in yesterday’s Liberation Day motorcade.
