Pediatrician Greg Webster of the University of California San Francisco Pediatric Residency Program recently completed a one-month residency rotation at the Commonwealth Health Center.

The program is funded by the Larry L. Hillblom Foundation through a grant application that the Department of Public Health submitted last year.

Medical director Richard Brostrom, who is one of the supervising physicians at the hospital, said that, despite Webster’s busy schedule, he did an outstanding job.

He said Webster, assisted by the clinic staff, also accomplished a rotation of tasks such as monitoring patients admitted to CHC and spending some time with two outlying clinics in San Antonio and San Roque.

A major barrier to providing quality healthcare in the hospital is the lack of doctors and other primary care providers in the community, according to DPH Secretary James U. Hofschneider in his application for the grant.

He said that, with the “Hillblom Pacific Resident Training Program, this will help address and mitigate the problem.

Hofschneider said the partnership with the Larry L. Hillblom, Inc. and the University of California in San Francisco’s School of Medicine attempts to improve future recruitment and retention of doctors. The program also provides a valuable clinical experience for senior medical and pediatric residents who are physicians in training.
