Community members and tourists would soon be enjoying walks along Garapan St. between Beach Road and the Chalan Pale Arnold in Garapan.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of Route 308 Garapan St. was held yesterday morning along the Garapan St. intersecting the Round Two Bar and Restaurant.

Gov. Juan N. Babauta and Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente led the groundbreaking ceremony, together with Department of Public Works Secretary Juan S. Reyes.

Reyes opened the ceremony, saying that the groundbreaking again marks the success of government projects that aim to beautify the islands for tourists and the local community.

Reyes said projects such as this give reasons for tourists to keep coming back to the island. “They find our place a beautiful paradise to visit: no traffic congestion, fresh air, clean surrounding, and warm people,” he said.

He said the project will include the reconstruction of the existing two-lane roadway connecting Beach Road and Chalan Pale Arnold, complete with pedestrian sidewalk on both sides of the roadway, and curb and gutter drainage system.

There will be 44 streetlights similar to that along the Beach Road pathway, he said.

Maeda Pacific Corp. will be the contractor of the project amounting to $845,000, with funds provided by the Federal Highway Administration and designed by the DPW Technical Services Division led by TSD director Richard N. Cody.

Babauta commended the department for the hard work and dedication they are providing to make the islands of the CNMI beautiful for the public.

Reyes said the project will commence on July 11 and is scheduled to be completed on March 8, 2006.
