Kang, triathletes are alone in spotlight
Athletes took a much-deserved break this past week, as they gear up for their participation in the 2005 Palau Mini Games later this month.
South Korean Seung Woo Kang, however, didn’t mind baking and sweating under the scorching midday sun last Saturday when he won the Championship Flight of the 3rd Annual NMC Foundation Open.
King Kang shot a 4-under par 69 to drub the field that included veteran par-busters Sasaki Oliver and Tsukasa Kuribayashi, who finished second and third place with scores of 70 and 72, respectively.
Much earlier in the day, even before the first duffers teed off at the LaoLao Bay Golf Resort, Team Pepsi, or the CNMI National Triathlon Team, completed their final tune-up for the Mini Games in a different part of the island in Marpi.
Team members Stephan Samoyloff, Dirk Sharer, Ketson “Jack” Kabiriel, Melissa Coleman, and Natasha Good joined other local triathletes in a 1,000-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike, and 5km run triathlon.
Yesterday, meanwhile, saw the year’s biggest motocross race rev up at the Cowtown Raceway Park in Marpi with several dozen local and international riders competing for glory in the 2005 Saipan MX Championships.
