DES PTA committee earns cash from trash
The Dandan Elementary School PTA Playground Committee cleaned up Laulau Bay Beach on Saturday May 7, 2005.
A group of more than 25 student, parents, teachers, principal, and community members collected trash that had accumulate on the beach and along Laulau Bay Road.
The project was a part of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce’s proactive Cash for Trash Program. The Chamber, in coordination with its members, sponsors educational or environment groups to clean the island’s roadway, parks and beaches.
The DES crew cleaned up a place where someone had dumped their household trash as well as trash left over from a picnic. The garbage were stuck in bushes and blowing around the beach.
The group collected over 15 bags of trash, even hauling away an old washing machine someone had dumped.
Precinct I Reps. Ben Seman and Joseph p. Deleon Guerrero provided water and hotdogs for the hungry trash collectors.
The money earned from this event will help build a playground for Dandan Elementary School. The school, now six year old, still does not have any playground equipment for its student to play on during breaks.
