RGA cancels Little League fundraiser
The Refaluwasch Golf Association has pulled the plug on its planned Saipan Little League Fundraising Golf Tournament after the event failed to get enough support from the private sector.
RGA president Jess Wabol announced the decision to mothball the tournament altogether Monday and said his club and Little League should just try it again next year.
“We will cancel it probably to before the start of 2006 season,” he said. “Aside from not having time, the solicitation we sent out to the businesses did not get a good response.”
Even as the Asia-Pacific Regional Tournament for Junior, Senior, and Big leagues wrapped up on Tinian the past week, Wabol still held out hope they would have been able to pull off the golfest the past weekend.
But to his disappointment, backing from the private sector didn’t pan out the way RGA and Little League expected it to.
“We needed to put up at least $1,500 and hope we could subsidize for the prizes for the players, but we only got a response from Saipan Stevedore,” he said.
Wabol also added that next week’s start of the 2005 South Pacific Mini Games in Palau has made the holding of the fundraising golf competition moot. He added that it was truly disappointing that the fundraising golf tournament had to be called off.
Proceeds from the golf tournament was supposed to be used to purchase trophies, medals, and other mementos for players that participated in the district tournament held on Rota last month. Wabol also said that money raised from the event could have also helped defray the cost of hosting the Asia-Pacific Regional Little League Tournament on Tinian.
