The Emergency Management Office and the National Weather Service in Guam are warning CNMI residents of strong winds in the next few days.

Both agencies said strong monsoon winds and a developing circulation to the west of the Marianas are generating rough seas, which will bring hazardous surf for the next few days.

EMO has also issued a small crafts advisory and high surf advisory that remained in effect as of 2pm yesterday afternoon for the islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.

The strong monsoon, according to the advisory, will bring winds from the south at 20 to 25 knots and with gusts of up to 35 knots until Saturday.

“Wind waves are from 5 to 7 feet then 9 to 11 feet high. The swells are from west to southwest at 6 feet. Widespread heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms will be causing poor visibility at times,” said the advisory.

The public, especially sea tour operators and divers, are advised to avoid venturing near reef and exposed beaches as wind and wave conditions support dangerous rip currents.

The agency has also issued a lightning risk advisory since yesterday afternoon. Cloud-to-ground lightning was expected yesterday. The public is also advised to avoid being in the water during heavy rains or when lightning strikes from time to time.
