While several teams the CNMI are busy competing for gold in the 2005 South Pacific Mini Games in Palau, a number of local athletes were busy attaining amber as the Saipan sluggers downed Guam in the finals of the 3rd Annual Marianas Softball Cup.

The carnival of mountain ball made its triumphant return to the hitter-friendly confines of Tan Ge Softball Field at the Oleai Sports Complex as Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benevente and the team from Tinian opened up the tournament with a win over Rota to get the ball rolling on their home turf, and Saipan checked in by topping the southernmost island in Marianas chain to force a channel challenge with Tinian.

Saipan earned another win against its closest neighbors, and Guam scored successive wins over Rota and Tinian to earn a rematch with Saipan for the Championship.

While Guam needed to win twice to earn the bragging rights, the Saipan squad needed win only once, and that’s exactly what they did, as Jerry Ayuyu was more than happy to receive $500 from Charles V. Cepeda of Pacific Trading Corp. on behalf of the team before the teams were treated to a banquet by the Tinian Mayor’s office at the Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino Ballroom.
