G-Rollers II defeat Sixers II
Garapan Rollers II finally hit paydirt by beating Sixers II, 86-77, as action in the 2005 Saipan Rotary Club Summer Youth Basketball League entered its fourth week Monday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Don Teregeyo and Rick Basila led the charge for G-Rollers II in the first half, as the Mutt-and-Jeff combo ignited the team’s fiery start that had them take a 42-27 advantage at the break.
Teregeyo and Basila combined for 19 points for coach Jose Tumaquip’s G-Rollers II, while the point totals were evenly spread in the first half for the overmatched Sixers II of coach Ryan Nisperos.
Sixers II, however, were not done fighting and were not about to make the game a walk in the park for their rivals from the island’s tourist district.
Burly Dwight Buena finally imposed his will inside, while Alvin Salas and Mark Dela Cruz found their stroke, as Sixers II appeared ready to give G-Rollers II a run for their money.
But time proved to be the south-siders’ biggest foil, as Sixers II ran out of ticks to completely overhaul the margin and they eventually lost by nine points.
Teregeyo topscored for Garapan with 22 points, while Basila, Alan Moses, and Don Camacho added 10 points or better for the victors.
Buena paced Sixers II with 17, while Salas, Aemir Villegas, and Dela Cruz added nine points or more for the losers.
It was the first win in three starts for Garapan’s junior squad, while the loss dropped Sixers II to a 0-3 win-loss card.
The 18-and-under league resumed last night with Ol’Aces taking on Sparks in the first game, while the second game featured Hoops against Saints. Results were not available as of press time. The lone game today would have undefeated and league-leading San Antonio taking on G-Rollers I.
