The cash-strapped Public School System has been releasing bid bulletins for the renovation and construction of classrooms on five public schools in the CNMI, including one on Rota.

PSS CIP coordinator Elizabeth Salas Balajadia said the education system is now keen on improving some of the islands’ school facilities based on last school year’s budget appropriation.

She said a bidding conference was held last week for the requirements of Kagman Elementary School, Kagman High School, San Vicente Elementary School, Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School, and Rota Junior High School.

PSS will be improving the drainage system at GTC Elementary School, said Balajadia. Six classrooms will be constructed on Rota Junior High School, Kagman Elementary School, and Kagman High School. The cafeteria of San Vicente Elementary School will also be improved.

Balajadia said the projects would take at least 240 days to complete except for the drainage system at GTC, which would only require 90 days of completion. All renovations and improvements is scheduled to be finished by July 2006, she said.

She said she would want to clarify that the construction of the new classrooms at Kagman High School would not include the renovation of the burnt down Environmental Science and Oceanography Room. The burnt down room, she said, would need another appropriation. The burglarized room was considered to be one of the most “high-tech” rooms of PSS due to the equipment and wireless technology that was set up inside the classroom.

The funding for the renovations and construction of classrooms would come from the following: Hazard Mitigation under the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA-Pongsona, Food Nutrition and Service, and bond interests, said Balajadia.
