Volcanic ash emissions continue
Anatahan’s volcanic activity subsided after escalating tremor levels were recorded Friday morning, but ash emissions continued to pose hazards in the air.
On Saturday, the Saipan seismic station recorded two regional earthquakes, according to the U.S. Geological Survey and the Emergency Management Office.
The agencies provided no other information about the earthquakes at press time, except that they occurred at about 1:43pm and 2:43pm.
On Anatahan, the agencies said tremor levels ranged from 30 to 70 percent of the peak levels recorded for the period June 17-26, which followed a strong eruption that sent ashes to 45,000 feet.
At about 11:10am Saturday, ash emissions rose to 16,000 feet and extended about 140 nautical miles northwest of the volcano, based on satellite monitoring by the Air Force Weather Agency.
Before noon yesterday, the Washington Volcanic Ash Advisory Center said ash plume rose to about 18,000 feet and extended about 110 nautical miles to the west-southwest of the volcano.
Last Wednesday, volcanic activity escalated and ash emissions reached an altitude of about 42,000 feet. (John Ravelo)
