Rota, Guam warned of floods
An urban and small stream flood advisory has been put into effect for Guam and Rota until 7am today.
According to the National Weather Service in Guam, the showers and thunderstorms in the vicinity of Guam and Rota have been increasing in area coverage and intensity during the past few hours. This area is associated with the developing tropical disturbance now gradually moving away from the west of Guam.
“At present, the area of heavy rains has not yet reached Tinian and Saipan. If heavy rains continue spreading northward, an urban and small stream flood advisory may be needed tonight for Tinian and Saipan,” reads part of the advisory, which was issued at 4:42pm yesterday.
The National Weather Service said that periods of heavy rainfall are likely on Guam and Rota. More than 1.6 inches of rainfall has already occurred yesterday afternoon at Andersen Air Force Base, while almost two inches of rainfall has been observed yesterday afternoon at the Inarajan rain gauge.
The agency projected that tropical moisture will continue arriving last night on southwest winds, wrapping around the east side of the disturbance.
“Rainfall rates of 2 inches or more per hour will be possible in heavier showers. This would add additional rainfall to soils, which are already saturated and [may] result in flooding of small streams, poor drainage areas and pooling of water on roadways,” it said.
For those who will be driving, the agency advised them to be alert for ponding of water on road and streets.
“Visibility may be low due to darkness and heavy rain. Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the road,” it said. (PR)
