Collision leads to fatal mauling
Police arrested on Thursday a Palauan man who allegedly mauled to death another man last Aug. 6 after both of them figured in a vehicular collision on Middle Road, Garapan, across the Commonwealth Health Center.
The victim, also a Palauan, died at the hospital Thursday night. Police said an autopsy on the victim’s body would be conducted.
Acting Department of Public Safety spokesman Eric F. David did not disclose the victim’s identity, but described him as a 34-year-old resident of San Roque. David also described the victim’s initials as TBA.
In a statement released yesterday, David said police arrested the suspect in the fatal mauling on Aug. 15. Armed with an arrest warrant issued by the Superior Court, detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau swooped down on Daniel Kintaro Santos and detained the suspect at the Division of Corrections.
Citing results of preliminary police investigation, David said Santos mauled the victim after a vehicular collision across the hospital on Aug. 6. David said Santos left the victim unconscious.
Police discovered the victim lying face down after patrolling officers noticed his car on the southbound lane’s shoulder. The car had an open hood and damaged front portion. When patrolling officers noticed no driver or passenger inside the car, they began to search the premises.
Police found the victim about 10 feet away from the vehicle. Police said the victim was unconscious and had injuries on his face. The victim was then brought to the hospital.
The court set the bail for Santos at $25,000. It was not clear as of press time if Santos has already managed to post bail. The victim died 10 days after the suspect’s arrest.
The Attorney General’s Office has yet to file formal criminal charges against Santos.
