Filipina takes first gold of 19th AIBC
While many on island were in their homes waiting for the weather to clear up, eight of CNMI’s finest bowlers were busy trying to represent the best they could as the 19th Asian Intercity Bowling Championship got underway yesterday at the Jaya Ancol Bowling Center in Jakarta, Indonesia.
As reported earlier, the CNMI delegation comprises of two teams, with veterans Joseph Sablan, John Santos, Simon Manacop, and Mark “The Shark” Halstead spearheading Team Saipan, and youth bowlers Raymond Zapanta, Raymond Angelles, and Ruselle Zapanta join Kitz Barja shouldering Capitol Hill’s campaign.
All eight were battling 16 others teams in the men’s singles competition yesterday, and official results weren’t available as of press time.
Meanwhile, Cecilia Yap of Paranaque City bagged the first gold medal of the competition as the filipina came from behind after trailing after the first four games to edge Jakarta’s Putty Armein.
Yap finished with a total of 1,301 pin falls while Armein took silver with 1,283 pins.
Hong Kong city’s Vanessa Fung took the bronze medal after bruising 1,213 pins.
A record 18 teams are taking part in the Championship including Busan of Korea, Chennai of India, Daegu of Korea, Happy Valley Club of Hong Kong, Kepulauan Seribu of Indonesia, Kowloon of Hong Kong, Hong Kong of China, Macau of China, Paranaque City of the Philippines, Pasay City of the Philippines, Shah Alam Bowling Club of Malaysia, Taipei City of Chinese Taipei, Tamuning of Guam, Uiwang of Korea, Victoria of China and host Jakarta City.
Day two—today—will feature battles in doubles competition, while team competition will be held tomorrow.
The scores in the three events will determine whether they qualify for the all-events medal.
The top 16 bowlers in the all-events will make the cut for the Masters Event, which unfolds on Saturday and is scheduled to conclude on Sunday with a stepladder finals.
The team is also accompanied by head of delegation and Saipan Bowling Association president Jerry Tan and manager Ross Zapanta.
