Classes will resume today at all public schools—except at Koblerville Elementary School, Saipan Southern High School and Marianas High School, which will remain closed due to the lack of power. However, if power resumed by midnight last night, then all schools would have regular classes today.

Education associate commissioner for administrative service David M. Borja released the public notice yesterday, saying that all schools—except the three—will have regular classes today.

“All schools in Rota and Tinian will also have classes today,” he added.

Borja said the three schools were forced to shut down operations due to the continued lack of power, which has resulted in the lack of a water supply to the schools. Most schools depend on electricity for their water pump to function; without power the schools will not be able to use the toilets and bathrooms.

Borja said, however, that the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has promised that it would try to fix the power problem in the areas of the affected schools.

Early yesterday afternoon, Borja said that even Kagman High School was supposed to have no classes today but power was restored before 4pm.

Borja assured that all buses are ready to transport the children to school today, saying that all PSS bus drivers are at work and will wait for the instructions from the head office as to which school needs its regular service. “The bus drivers are always ready to pick up the kids,” he said.

Aside from power outages, some schools also sustained damage from Typhoon Nabi. Borja said that the Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School reported to his office that the roof of some classrooms were blown off by strong winds. Several classrooms were also drenched by the heavy rains.
