VFW commemorates Patriot Day
Those whom we lost on Sept. 11, 2001 will forever hold a cherished place in our hearts and in the history of our nation. By a joint resolution, Congress authorized the President to designate Sept. 11 of each year as “Patriot Day” to perpetuate the memory of those who perished in the attack on America. Appropriate ceremonies and activities include a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. EDT. Flags should be flown at half-staff on Patriot Day.
Four years ago today, our nation wept. The senseless atrocities, committed by a few, left thousands dead and a nation stunned. But as our tears dried and reality set in, our enemies witnessed firsthand our strength and determination as a nation.
Today, our nation again faces adversity. Hurricane Katrina has left thousands of our citizens homeless and desperate. Many of those are our nation’s veterans and military families. They have very little hope and a devastated spirit. They need our help—NOW.
Every American needs to open their heart and give to those in need. Today, as we honor the memory of those whose lives were cut short because of the attack on America, we can take solace in knowing that their memory has served to inspire a greater enthusiasm for service. Let us vow to recommit ourselves to our families, our communities and to our country. Let us each be determined to do more in their name to make the United States an even greater nation than ever before.
Monetary donations for the veterans and military families in need from Hurricane Katrina may be dropped off at the VFW Post Home in the former California Hotel on Beach Road or by mail to VFW Saipan Post 3457. Veterans of Foreign Wars, Saipan Post 3457, PMB 529 PPP Box 10000, Saipan, MP 96950.
