DoF employee arrested for alleged theft
Authorities have arrested a Finance Department employee for allegedly stealing excise tax collections amounting to at least $10,800 to pay bills and buy illegal drugs.
The Division of Customs Services charged Genoveva Dlg. Lee, a 45-year-old Finance Department cashier, with theft, theft of service and misconduct in public office.
Lawmen arrested Lee last Monday. She, however, has reportedly posted a property bond for her temporary release.
In an affidavit submitted to the Superior Court, Customs Agent Task Force officer Frank S. Quitugua said Lee was assigned to work at the Customs Chalan Kanoa Post Office. Part of her duties was to inspect mails and collect excise taxes, Quitugua said.
Customs officials discovered that some $10,800 has been missing, prompting its officials to conduct an internal investigation.
Lee allegedly admitted taking small amounts of $10 and $20 bills from the cash box containing payments made by customers. Since May, she admitted to have taken a total of over $3,000.
Quitugua said Lee confessed to stealing money to pay bills and buy illegal drugs.
The court has scheduled Lee’s arraignment on Sept. 26.
