Over a year after Supertyphoon Chaba wiped out the CNMI’s crops, some 75 farmers will receive monetary assistance from the CNMI government, which is processing the release of some $170,000 soon.

Isidoro T. Cabrera, agricultural consultant to the Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service, disclosed this yesterday.

Cabrera said the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation earmarked the funds to assist local farmers affected by the onslaught of the supertyphoon sometime in August last year. Cabrera said the funds would be distributed proportionately to the farmers.

This development comes after typhoon Nabi damaged agricultural crops again earlier this month. Compared to the damage caused by Chaba, however, Nabi’s damage was not that widespread, according to Cabrera.

He said CREES and the Division of Agriculture under the Department of Land and Natural Resources are finalizing a damage assessment report in connection with Nabi. Preliminary report estimated the damage at $300,000, he said.

The crops damaged by Nabi include tomato, eggplant, string beans, okra, pumpkin, cabbage, squash, banana, papaya, cassava, and other fruit trees.
