Local VFW Post helps in Hurricane Katrina relief effort
With Hurricane Rita bearing down on the Gulf States the need for additional assistance is growing by the hour. VFW Posts throughout that area are providing food, shelter and clothing to many displaced residents.
According to Barry Hirshbein, Saipan VFW Post commander, nearly 10,000 VFW Posts around the world have been asked to conduct fundraising events around the same time.
The members of the Saipan VFW Post have already donated $1,000 to the relief efforts. That was followed closely by a $500 donation from Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela and $500 from Paradise Island Animal, a hospital owned by VFW member Dr. Ed Tudor.
“We have close to $3,000 in monetary donations and almost as much in gifts for our raffle fundraiser. Community support has been outstanding but we still need more help,” said Hirshbein. “I believe that with just a little more effort the Saipan VFW Post, and the people of the CNMI, can be among the top contributors in this international VFW relief drive.”
The VFW will host two fundraising events starting with a raffle and auction event thus Friday, Sept. 30, starting at 6pm. The VFW is asking for new items and gift certificates to raffle and auction at this event.
The VFW would also hold a Parking Lot Sale next Saturday, Oct. 1, beginning at 8am. The VFW will accept donations of new and used items in good condition.
Both events will be held at the VFW Post Home on Beach Road in the former California Hotel Building. If you have any questions please contact Hirshbein by email at cnmilaw@yahoo.com or phone at 236-0904. (PR)
