The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. will transfer its Power Plant 3 generators, currently located near the Saipan Airport in Dandan, to Lower Base, according to CUC executive director Lorraine A. Babauta.

Power Plant 3 consists of three generators that are not functioning.

Babauta said she deemed it more practical to just bring those generators near the main power plant in Lower Base.

The three engines will be rehabilitated using parts from Tinian generators.

Power Plant 3 has a capacity of 4.5MW.

The CUC earlier planned to make Power Plant 3 a backup power plant to ensure uninterrupted water and sewer services in case of emergencies.

Babauta said this matter is still addressed even with the transfer of Power Plant 3 to Lower Base.

CUC earlier said that it would get one generator from the old Tinian power plant as part of efforts to restore the Isley Field Power Plant.

Generators at the old Tinian power plant have been idle since CUC privatized power service on Tinian.

Telesource CNMI is the independent power producer running the new power plant on the island.

CUC earlier took some engine parts from Tinian to fix a generator at Power Plant 2 in Lower Base.

Power Plant 3 was originally constructed in 1993. It is located at Isley Field near the Saipan International Airport.

Right now, Power Plan 1, which consists of six operational engines, generate a total of 53MW; Power Plant 2, which has two functioning engines, produces 3.2MW; and Power Plant 4 has six operational units that generate 8.8MW.

By design, CUC engines generate 118.2MW.
