Ray Salas emerged from a field of 30 strikers and slicers to take the September honors as the Saipan Golfers Association Ace of the Month after his clubs and handicap propelled him to the top of the standings on Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Kingfisher Golf Links.

According to SGA secretary Larry Guerrero, the win didn’t come easy, as Salas actually finished two strokes behind free-swinging Max Castro at the end of the day, but Salas had an ace up his sleeve with a 26-handicap that evened the net score at 63 apiece.

Salas broke the tie with a bogey on the resulting playoff hole when Castro scored a double-bogey.

In addition to the September Ace, the duffers were dueling in the inaugural SGA-Fil-Taga Cup. To add extra excitement to the affair, golfers engaged in a “Closest to the Pin” competition on the four Par 3 holes. Rex Palacios landed his ball a dimple away from the target on the sixth green, while Castro repeated the feat on the eighth. Jess Castro took the honors on Hole 12, and Tony Benavente, Jr. earned the final plum on the 15th just after driving the longest ball on the 14th fairway.

Tony Sr. demonstrated that the longball runs in the family, as he out-drove the field from the second tee.
