The Tinian local delegation passed a bill last week appropriating $39,500 for the municipal scholarship program.

House Local Bill 14-82, authored by Tinian congressman Norman S. Palacios, aims to source the funds from local license fees for pachinko slot machines and poker machines.

The bill gives the expenditure authority to the Tinian Municipal Board, which administers the program.

“The money will come from the revenues collected pursuant to local law 11-2,” said Palacios.

The scholarship program provides financial aid to qualified postsecondary and post-graduate students enrolled at the Northern Marianas College and off-island institutions.

The program has extended grants to hundreds of Tinian students.
