Basula Produkto, a local company that recycles cardboard, white paper, aluminum, glass, and plastic, is keen on extending its environmental-friendly service to Palau.

Company president Eric Cruz disclosed his plans to Saipan Tribune yesterday as he shared how impressed he was during his last visit to the Republic of Palau.

He said he saw more than 6,000 tons of scrap metal and other waste products on Arai. “There were tons of ferrous and non-ferrous materials not recycled yet,” Cruz said.

Cruz said he was in Palau for another business when his friend took him to dumpsites and places where there were junk metals.

“I would go back again and reassess to penetrate that market,” he said.

Right now, Cruz said the local government is managing the waste materials in the areas he visited in Palau. He said so far there are no investors yet that are putting up recycling operations in Palau.

“There are operations that recycle aluminum materials only but other than that, there’s none,” he said.

He will be returning to Palau on Oct. 10 or 13 to re-evaluate the new business opportunity.

In the CNMI, Cruz said he would also be expanding and opening similar but remote recycling sites on Rota and Tinian. He said he would be opening operations beginning Nov. 2 on both islands.

Basula Produkto is a half-a-million-dollar investment that opened a bigger and new recycling office site in April at the MAEDA/ERICCO office in Tanapag.

A joint venture between ERICCO Enterprises and MAEDA Pacific Corp., Basula Produkto aims to provide the CNMI a recycling site run by a local company.
