Garapan Rollers II played well down the stretch and came back from a six-point halftime deficit to beat Hoops, 60-48, in Wednesday’s resumption of the 2005 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Hoops seemed to have control of the ballgame, holding favor after the first 20 minutes courtesy of a well-balanced offensive show that featured eight players sharing the scoring load.

T.J. Sablan and Woo Joo Jung were at the forefront of the Hoops’ run, punching in seven and six points to help the team take a comfortable 35-29 lead into halftime.

For his part, speedy guard Nate Mateo knocked down a couple of triples and kept the G-II crew in good shape with 10 points.

Mateo picked up where he left off and took credit for the team’s first two baskets as action resumed.

Arvin Avila, Dan Mateo, James Sablan, and Alan Moses also stepped up their game offensively, and while the team was on track in duplicating its first-half offensive performance, the Hoopsters started slowing down, resulting in the lead swinging to the G-Rollers’ corner.

With the G-II defense working its magic, the Garapan players managed to outscore their opponents, 31-13, in the half to leave with the 12-point win.

Nate Mateo led G-II with a game-high 19 points, while Avila and Dan Mateo contributed 10 and nine points, respectively.

Ton Esteves paced Hoops with nine points while Sablan had seven points.

Rotary action continued last night as the Capitol Hill Breeze battled the Chalan Kanoa Saints and the San Antonio Sixers II took on San Antonio. Results were not available as of press time.

Action resumes on Monday with the Matansa Sparks squaring off against the G-Rollers II.
