American tourists hurt in scooter mishap
A sunny mid-afternoon sightseeing trip for a brother-and-sister pair from Guam and Pennsylvania was ruined yesterday because of a road mishap that hurt one of them.
The duo, who did not want to be identified, were riding scooters along Beach Road in the direction of Garapan around 2pm when the accident occurred.
According to the victim, he and his sister were on the shoulder lane when a green pickup truck with plate number ACD-773 behind them suddenly passed them and then made an instant turn to right heading to the National Office Supply.
The victim hit the brakes and, due to the suddenness of the stop, was thrown out of his scooter and wound up on the curb of the road with bruises and a sprained hand.
A motorist who was behind the green pickup truck said he witnessed exactly what happened, adding that the pickup truck did not signal when he made his turn. He said the driver of the truck should have given way to the victim by letting him and his sister pass first before turning right to the NOS building.
The driver of the green pickup truck, however, refuted the statement, insisting that he did not hit the victim. He also said he turned his right signal light at least 30 meters away from his destination and said the victim might have panicked and turned on the front wheel brake, causing him to flip, roll, and skid on the road.
The witness said the victim was fortunate that he did not break his neck from the accident.
Police immediately responded to the scene and an ambulance soon followed. The victim was immediately treated and was released. The victim’s sister burst into tears after she saw her brother being released by paramedics.
The two American tourists were on Saipan for a two-day visit and were staying at Pacific Islands Club.
