Last weekend’s 2005 Island Auto Show drew a lot of controversy over its decision to stage a wet T-shirt contest, but organizers said it was just an amateur show and was tamer compared with what is rampantly shown in the mainland.

Sorensen Pacific Broadcasting Saipan general manager Tina Palacios said the wet T-shirt contest was just one of the highlights of the evening’s entertainment. She said the public was informed around 10pm that there would be such a show later that night.

Palacios said she specifically informed parents who brought along their children to keep them away as much as possible from the show. She also added that the wet T-shirt contest began at 11:30pm, which was way past the children’s bedtime.

Palacios also denied reports that the women involved in the contest were prostitutes.

“It’s supposed to be all fun. We’ve been planning it, talked about it, but nobody said anything,” she said, adding that before the actual event there were announcements on TV, radio, and print indicating that the wet T-shirt showdown was one of the night’s highlights.

She said she received calls from the business community thanking her group for putting up the car show, which attracted thousands of people, local visitors and tourists alike. She said the business establishments were appreciative of what the event brought to their business that night.

“Nothing’s going to stop us now and we’re going to do better next year,” Palacios said. “We are strong and we are going to contribute more to the community.”

Power 99 and The Rock organized the event.
