Saipan Rotary Club president James Whitt participated in Tanapag Elementary School’s Community Readers Day on Oct. 28.

Joined by his wife Debra, Whitt read a passage from the book Tikki, Tikki, Tembo to 4th graders, while his better half read the book entitled Heckedy Peg to 4th graders as well. The Whitts also met with TES principal Francisca Ulloa.

Whitt used the chance to read to grade school students to encourage participation in Rotary’s upcoming Parade of Books project, which would be held on Nov. 19, Saturday, 3pm to 7pm at the American Memorial Park Amphitheater.

The local Rotary Club organization is encouraging all public and private schools—kindergarten to eighth grade—to sign up to participate. Schools that participate will parade in costumes representing characters and scenery from a chosen book that they have read. The Rotary Club is offering cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place schools that best depict, in the form of costume and school spirit, the book read.

Also on hand at the event, will be representatives of the Joeten Kiyu Public Library who will be accepting first time library card applicants. Library officials explain there will be no charge for first time applicants. Parents are encouraged to bring along a photo ID and proof of address, such as a billing statement, in order to register children ages six and up for a library card.

Rotary Club of Saipan supports the Public School System’s emphasis for all students to “READ TODAY.” The Rotary Club president explained that the Parade of Books is an excellent opportunity for kids to read and have fun with their classmates during the parade. The Rotary Club of Saipan is part of District 2750 and its District Governor, Isao Ichikawa, emphasizes the importance of improving literacy.

“The event has drawn muchors and the Rotary Club hopes that this project will be successful. Parents of school children and the general public are welcome to show their support by also dressing in costumes depicting their favorite storybook character,” said Whitt.
