Heinz tops MHS mock polls
Rep. Heinz Hofschneider ruled yesterday’s mock elections at the Marianas High School that was conducted by the MHS Junior States of America Club.
Of the 320 student and school staff voters, Hofschneider led the mock elections with 98 votes or 31 percent of the total, while fellow candidates House Speaker Benigno Fitial and incumbent Gov. Juan N. Babauta came second and third, respectively. Fitial garnered 92 votes, or 29 percent, while Babauta got 72 votes, or 22 percent of the votes. Former governor Froilan Tenorio received 58 votes or 18 percent of the votes.
The club’s adviser, Chas Algaier, said the mock election was held during the school’s lunch break.
“Hunger and heat did not keep eager students from the polls, and JSA volunteer poll watchers reported no violence or illegal polling activities on the part of any of the candidates’ supporters,” he said, tongue firmly in cheek.
JSA president Na Lim Heo said the turnout of the activity was great. She said the participation was overwhelming and that the process went smoothly. “We had a lot of kids voting and things went well,” said Heo.
Heo added that the election was a non-binding affair, as many of those casting votes would have been disenfranchised from actually participating in the upcoming general election due to age or residency requirements. Heo was quick to deny, however, the “predictive powers” of the MHS ballot.
“Should Hofschneider phone his interior decorator with plans for measuring the drapes in the governor’s mansion come January?” asked Algaier, adding that while the MHS mock poll may offer some hope, he said it would still be best if Hofschneider waits for Saturday’s official ballots to be counted before making the call.
