Verizon, SIS reach zenith
Verizon and Saipan International School were the top performers after claiming championship in their respective sports in the week and a half that had just passed.
After surrendering the 35-and-over Masters Basketball League title more than a year ago, Verizon needed no less than a Herculean effort to reclaim it this year when it defeated Heinz and Dave Proa twice in the finals to take home the championship.
It first erased the NMC squad’s twice-to-beat advantage in Game 1 with a 108-92 victory last Oct. 29 then clinched the championship with a similar 102-89 rout on Game 2 Sunday.
The SIS Geckos, meanwhile, were as cold-blooded as they could be when they defeated the Marianas Baptist Academy Storm in the championship of the 2005 Private School Volleyball League Thursday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. The team’s hard earned 26-24, 23-25, 15-10 victory against the Storm completed an unprecedented 17-0 sweep of the junior varsity division of PSVL.
In golf, Alex Aquininoc bested all duffers to rule the inaugural Northwest Airlines Tournament for Children’s Education held last Oct. 29 at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort. Aquininoc tattooed the greens and fairways with a Callaway scoring system-aided net of 68.6 to edge runner-up Joji Taguchi and his net of 69 for the championship.
Last Saturday also saw Northern Marianas Athletics host the second qualifying trials for the Micronesian Athletic Championships at the Oleai Sports Complex track and field facility.
The 6th Annual UFO Inter-Organization Basketball League also kicked off last Sunday with a grand opening that humbled previous openings of the all-Filipino cagefest.
The week also witnessed action in the Commonwealth Football, the Miller Lite Coed Four-Person Beach Volleyball League, Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League, Budweiser Cup BANMI Men’s Island-wide Basketball League, World Organized Rocball High School League, and the Fall and Masters divisions of the Saipan Major League continue in several sporting venues around the island.
