US deaths in Iraq
As of Thursday last week, at least 2,037 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, including three from the Northern Mariana Islands, according to an Associated Press count.
At least 1,583 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military’s numbers. The figures include five military civilians.
The latest deaths reported by the military:
∑ A U.S. soldier was killed Thursday during combat operations near Baqouba.
∑ A U.S. soldier was killed Wednesday during combat operations when his vehicle was attacked with an explosive in Ramadi.
The latest identifications reported by the military:
Army Staff Sgt. Wilgene T. Lieto, 28; and Army Spc. Derence W. Jack, 31; both of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands; killed Monday when a bomb exploded near their vehicle in Balad; assigned to the Army Reserve’s 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry, 29th Brigade Combat Team, Barrigada, Guam.
Marine Maj. Gerald M. Bloomfield II, 38, Ypsilanti, Mich., and Marine Capt. Michael D. Martino, 32, Fairfax, Va.; died Wednesday when their helicopter crashed near Ramadi, Iraq; assigned to Light-Attack Helicopter Squadron 369, Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Army Spc. Dennis J. Ferderer Jr., 20, New Salem, N.D.; died Wednesday in Duluiyah when a grenade hit his vehicle; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Ga.
Marine Sgt. Daniel A. Tsue, 27, Honolulu; died Tuesday from an explosive near Ramadi; assigned to the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Allan M. Cundanga Espiritu, 28, Oxnard, Calif.; died Tuesday from an explosive near Ramadi; assigned to the 2nd Force Service Support Group (Forward), II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).
Army 1st Lt. Robert C. Oneto-Sikorski, 33, Bay St. Louis, Miss.; killed Monday by an explosive in Iskandariyah; assigned to the Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 155th Infantry, Biloxi, Miss. (AP)
