The Hopwood Junior High School received yesterday morning a plaque and a commemorative flag from the CNMI’s soldiers who are on active duty in Iraq.

HJHS teacher Christine Halloran said the plaque expressed the soldiers’ deep gratitude for all the letters and gifts items that Hopwood students sent them since last year.

She said the school did not expect the soldiers’ gifts and was pleasantly surprised upon receiving them. She said that there were also letters from the soldiers.

It was an honor, she said, that the junior high school was chosen to be given the memorabilia from Iraq.

Halloran said the flag and the plaque were flown from Baghdad.

The school has sent over 100 letters to the soldiers in Iraq. Halloran said a fellow teacher, Rory Starkey, initiated the project since last year. She said other schools and private organization have begun to implement the same project.

Halloran said she is proud of the HJHS students because they made the cards out of their own allowances, unlike other groups that are sending packages to soldiers in Iraq right now. She said the other groups’ projects are either funded by the local government or raised from fundraising activities.

She said the school is honored and proud of the wonderful letters and cards their students sent to Iraq, which included prayer cards that the students made. The prayer cards were written in both Chamorro and English.

The flag and the plaque are displayed at the office of school principal Jim Brewer.
