NMC dept gets $56K grant
The Northern Marianas College Science, Mathematics, and Technology Department has been awarded a new two-year federal grant under the Pacific Islands Educational Partnership Consortium program.
According to a recent media release the department will get a federal grant worth $56,250 per year from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The mission of PIEPC is to support the continued development of the regional institutions of higher education as centers to provide technical and educational services to governmental agencies, community-based organizations, the private sector, and the broader community of stakeholders in the marine and environmental sciences.
“The participating institutions include NMC, American Samoa Community College, the College of Micronesia–FSM, the College of the Marshall Islands, Palau Community College, and the University of Guam,” read the media release.
The University of Hawaii and other interested universities will be providing technical and logistical support.
The overall two-year funding for the Pacific region is $750,000. The University of Guam serves as the grant administrator and NMC is just a sub-awardee, said the media release.
The media release also said that over the next two years this grant would help kick-start staffing requirements for the new Marine and Environmental Sciences Center and reinvigorate the dormant marine technology side of NMC’s Natural Resources Program. (Marconi Calindas)
